We have a lot of brides asking us what the difference is between airbrush makeup application and traditional makeup application? So we are here to shed light on this subject and break down the differences between the two.

Traditional Makeup:

What is it?

When makeup artists use the term ‘Traditional Makeup’ they are referring to the application and use of foundation applied with tools you’d use at home. So whether it be liquid, cream or a powder foundation used with a foundation brush, sponge or a duo fiber brush (a.k.a. skunk brush). With traditional makeup there are a plethora of formulations for all types of skin, offering anything from light to full coverage.

Pros:

  1. Wide range of shades and formulations available on the market that can tailor to each individuals ‘ skin color tone and skin conditions

Airbrush Makeup:

What is it?

Airbrush makeup utilizes a small makeup air compressor, an airbrush gun, and special airbrush foundation. This foundation – which is either water based or silicone based – is thinner than regular liquid foundation as it needs to pass through the airbrush gun. The airbrushing sprays a very fine mist on the skin pushed through with gentle air pressure from the compressor. This allows, when sprayed on properly, an even and consistent application of foundation, which sits evenly on the skin. Whether you have oily skin or dry, airbrush is light enough where you will not sweat away your makeup and heavy enough where it can cover one’s imperfections, such as pimples and hyperpigmentation. Though airbrush is longer lasting compared to regular makeup in theory, the longevity really depends on the health of the person's skin.

What are the pros?

  1. Long lasting and ideal for all-day wear. Most airbrushed makeup is silicone based, which means it lasts longer and is more water resistant than regular makeup. It’s able to withstand rainy and hot sunny weather as well as all the hugging and kissing that will inevitably happen throughout the wedding day!
  2. Airbrush gives the skin a porcelain finish in pictures. Perfect for creating an impeccably smooth, flawless, and natural finish for the hundreds of pictures that you’ll be taking all day.
  3. Requires much less product for maximum coverage (compared to traditional makeup), thus provides a lightweight yet great coverage without “caking” the skin. It is ideally for evening out the problematic skin conditions such as oiliness, hyperpigmentation, and acne-prone skin.
  4. Coverage is buildable. As each layer of applied airbrush makeup dries, you can add layers for more coverage.
  5. It is quick and sanitary; nothing but air and makeup touch the face.

Why Airbrush Makeup Cost More?

Airbrush makeup requires specialized foundation, an air gun and compressor to apply, which is costly for the artist. Airbrushing techniques also required special trainings and skills, which is also add on additional cost for the artist.

The makeup you end up using should be based on your skin concerns. As discussed in this post, airbrush makeup and traditional makeup each have merits. Just like anything in beauty, one size doesn't fit all. Your makeup artist will make the judgment call in the end to give you the best tool for the job!
